THIS JOB HAS EXPIRED The Scientist (Differentiation Segment) is a bench level position that works in collaboration with the R&D segment team for Differentiation to develop and test new products and new applications of existing products related to Cellular Differentiation. As a member of the R&D team, the researcher will design and perform experiments at the forefront of pluripotent stem cell biology and cell fate manipulation. The position is located in San Diego, CA.
Product and application development for both directed differentiation and direct reprogramming. This includes differentiation of pluripotent stem cells (embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells) toward target cell types, as well as transdifferentiation of differentiated cell types directly into other cell types.
Maintenance of human ES and iPS cells under feeder-dependent and -independent culture conditions.
Characterization of in vitro-derived differentiated cell types using standard methods such as flow cytometry, real-time PCR, immunostaining, phase/fluorescence microscopy and relevant functional assays where applicable.
Maintenance of detailed, accurate and up-to-date records.
Assist in writing and revising technical documents including standard operating procedures, testing protocols, project reports, and scientific presentations.
Support other areas and colleagues in R&D that focus on Reprogramming, Stem Cell Culture, and Reprogramming Services.
Support colleagues in other departments such as Marketing, Quality Control, Manufacturing, and Reprogramming Training Courses
Take initiative, be able to lead and drive projects to completion with minimal direction
Ability to design experiments with clear rationale, appropriate controls, anticipation of possible outcomes, methods of trouble-shooting and/or analysis that will enable solid conclusions

Ph.D. in a life science discipline (biology, cell and molecular biology, developmental biology, bioengineering) with minimum of 2 years postdoctoral experience in stem cell biology.
Expertise in testing and developing protocols for the directed differentiation of human ES or iPS cells towards ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm lineages.
Expertise in the characterization of one or more differentiated cell types such as those of neural, pancreatic, hepatic, cardiac, or muscle lineages.
Hands-on experience with culturing human ES and iPS cells in both feeder and feeder-free environments.
Experience with either the derivation of ES cells or generation of iPS cells a plus.
Expertise in characterizing pluripotent stem cells and their differentiated progeny using flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, real-time PCR and basic molecular and biochemical techniques.
Experience with functional testing of in vitro-derived cells versus endogenous counterparts a plus.
Strong desire to develop novel products for the stem cell market.
Ability to design and execute experiments, analyze results, troubleshoot experiments, and formulate conclusions.
Excellent organizational skills including the ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize, and handle multiple tasks.
Proficiency in generating and delivering presentations and project reports.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Solid computer software skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Photoshop
Outstanding work ethic, highly motivated, and willing to work as part of matrix teams.
