Job Qualifications (basic job description):
Aurora Flight Sciences is seeking an experienced Senior Airframe Structures Design Engineer to join our growing team in our Manassas, VA Facility. This position requires an action and results oriented individual who can effectively achieve demanding development and production goals. This individual must also be able to interact and communicate at all levels of the organization. Relocation assistance is available.
Under the general direction of Engineering management, serve as a senior-level member of a design team providing preliminary details of airframe structural elements. Primary product lines for design activities will be unmanned aerial vehicles, modification of existing aircraft structures, fixed and rotary wing, and design-to-build activities for commercial and military aircraft including composite and metallic structure, mechanical system components/routings and electrical/avionics systems component installations.
Responsible for manufacturing engineering activities for assigned projects in development and production of aerospace composite structure and systems fabrication and assemblies. As a senior position, this includes technical mentoring and tasking of less experienced site manufacturing engineers
Perform Airframe structural configuration layout and detail design including structural layouts, preliminary sizing, joint layouts and part design utilizing metallic and composite materials. Develop design specification requirements with respect to construction of the product to meet interface boundaries, weight targets, cost targets.
Coordinate with Program Office to ensure design schedule, customer requirements and cost metrics are appropriately tracked and executed to ensure customer satisfaction. Prepare and presenting Airframe Design technical, schedule and cost status as required throughout the program including PDR & CDR briefings. Ensure all Airframe Design contract deliverables are prepared and submitted per required program schedules.
Ability to lead a team from 5 to 15 engineers, providing day-to-day tasking, review of progress and planning design activities over the life of the program. As appropriate, develop tasking for personnel assigned to the program to ensure successful completion of project objectives.
Coordinates with manufacturing, procurement, quality control and other departments as required to take the design from conception to production.
Prepares documentation to support design decisions and to resolve issues. Prepares PowerPoint presentations for Gated Design Reviews. Assists the project engineer in preparing for technical interchange meetings and technical program reviews.
Minimum Requirements (education and experience):
BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited university.
Minimum of 10 years of work experience in the Aerospace industry or related field.
Demonstrated ability to lead a team consisting of Design, Analysis and Manufacturing personnel.
Minimum of 4,000 hours experience with CATIA V5 w/a focus on Generative Surface Design, Part Design and Assembly. Experience in Unigraphics or Pro-E will be considered based on supporting background.
Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Must be a US Citizen or Legal US Permanent Resident Alien.
Highly Desirable Qualifications:
Strong technical background including familiarity with industry standards for the manufacture, repair and assembly of composite components for aerospace.
Experience with engineering and/or manufacturing development of structural parts and assemblies utilizing composite materials.
Experience with the composite part detail process, including composites stacking sequence, lamination theory, honeycomb core, bonded assemblies, manufacturing assembly and fabrication processes, post-cure machining operations.
Experience with prototype or rate part production with exposure to tool design, manufacturing planning and hands on fabrication.
Strong knowledge of GD&T per ASME Y14.5 and CAD file structure is required, along with tolerance analysis capabilities. Experience in application ASME Y 14.41 methods for Model Based Definition is highly desirable.
Knowledge of structural sizing methodologies and tools, with direct experience performing sizing of airframe components.
Experience with FAA qualification activities, designing to appropriate FAR standards and interfacing with DERs.
Experience with CATIA V5 CPD (Composite Part Design) and/or FiberSIM is a plus
