The Senior Open Source Systems Engineer designs, installs, configures, maintains, analyzes, and resolves problems with server and storage hardware, Linux operating systems, and application software in a design and architecture capacity. This individual provides production support, maintenance, implementation and design of critical Linux-based server and application infrastructure. This individual detects, diagnoses, and fixes Open Source Linux-related problems on server systems, as well as performs a wide variety of tasks in software/hardware maintenance and operational support of Open Source Linux server systems. This role will lead and contribute to researching, planning, and implementing technology improvements, and the design of technical disaster recovery plans. This role will also apply knowledge, skills, and experience in consulting arrangements with external customers
Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of Open Source Linus (Redhat based RHEL) servers including security updates, performance monitoring, and capacity planning.
Provide internal and external support for Open Source -based systems and standard applications such as Apache, BIND, PowerDNS, Zimbra, Sendmail, Postfix, CVS, GIT and LDAP.
Manage and maintain the centralized web filtering system used by our customers which leverages knowledge of general website design methodology.
Use working knowledge of the OSI Application Model, the TCP/IP stack, and basic Internet protocols such as SMTP, DNS, and HTTP to both help design solutions and troubleshoot customer and production issues.
Leverage extensive Open Source LINUX scripting/automation experience in PHP, PERL, PYTHON, bash, and shell scripts to develop and automate services and solutions.
Utilize working knowledge of SQL and basic database management for Open Source Linux database packages (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Couchbase) to support existing infrastructure and deliver services.
Apply experience in SAN technologies including fiber & ISCSI connectivity to maintain storage infrastructure.
Utilize working knowledge of virtualization technologies such as Linux KVM or CloudStack to maintain existing infrastructure and support additional growth.
Provide remote assistance to the Field Engineering Team in support of remote production servers and services.
Research and recommend system and business process improvements.
Research and recommend technology or architecture improvements in a very dynamic, multi-vendor network.
Lead projects, interface with other groups, and apply technology expertise to resolve unique problems.
Support ?on-call? duties as required.

Education and/or Experience:
This position requires 6 or more years? experience supporting Open Source Linux (RHEL-based) servers and applications in a design, architecture, and implementation capacity. Hands-on experience with these operating systems is required. Foundational knowledge of the OSI Application Model, the TCP/IP stack, and basic Internet protocols such as SMTP, DNS, and HTTP. Experience with some or all of the following applications are preferred: BIND 8/9, NGINX, PowerDNS, Content Filtering, Proxy servers, Apache, Zimbra, Tomcat, Sendmail, Postfix, MailScanner, SpamAssassin, MySQL, Couchbase, PostgreSQL, Nagios, Cricket, Rancid, SNMP, OpenLDAP, PHP, Perl, Python, bash, and shell scripting. Basic knowledge of SQL, Cisco IOS and routing preferred. Candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced, deadline- and customer-driven environment and accomplish goals with little supervision. Experience working in an ISP environment preferred. Linux Certifications a plus.
Excellent oral and written skills with ability to present technical information in an understandable way to clients as well as non-technical associates. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, or technical procedures. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
The noise level in the work environment is moderate.
Company hours accommodate our customer?s needs which require coverage on a rotating weekly, on-call schedule. Late night maintenance and emergency trouble restoration will be required as necessary. This is an exempt position so the hours of work will be dependent on the work that needs to be addressed to accomplish the work ascribed to this position. Up to 10% travel may be required.
